Health and Heritage now hand-in-hand: Spiti Heritage Run

Running long distances is an amazing feeling that subjects you to extremes, putting you in your element. So to say, it gives you an amazing feeling. But here’s a run with a twist. Imagine, a high-altitude run amidst the picturesque snowy mountains of the Himalayas! India has always been famous for its heritage places. So on this World Heritage Day we bring you one of the places considered as a heritage site by the Archaeological Survey of India. We bring you the majestic Spiti. The Kyi Monastery PC: The Kyi Monastery
PC: Royon Samajik Sansthan is organising a ‘Heritage Run’ to create awareness of the several lesser-known heritage structures spread across India. India has a long history to boast of with influence and traces of several cultures spread across the land. Although most of them come under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the funds are few and hence maintenance of the same has been a hassle. With this ‘Heritage Run’ Royon aims to popularise these heritage structures so as to bring them in the limelight. Among the many to come, ready yourself for the first run of the series starting at the beautiful village of Tabo, in the Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh on the 26th of June this year. You read that right. Tabo in Spiti it is! Spiti Valley has stayed blissfully away from commercialisation and is replete with pretty mud-brick houses in the background of the Spiti River and the snow-clad Himalayas, almost like out of a picture. Among the several exciting opportunities that Spiti holds, the most enchanting is Tabo monastery, a heritage structure of the valley. The Tabo monastery maintained by the ASI is revered as one of the divine monasteries by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. It was founded in 996 CE and is noted for being the oldest continuously operating Buddhist monastery in India and the Himalayas. Tabo Monastery Tabo Monastery
PC: Although prettier than most Himalayan towns, Spiti still remains unknown to many as compared to popular towns like Shimla, Manali or even Ladakh. For this reason, travelling till Spiti can be a little tricky.   The Half Marathon is a time based run.
